The site features the courthouse where he was arrested, the jail where he was held, and the location where he was fatally shot while trying to protect a fellow activist. A plaque and mural at the site depict the Civil Rights Movement in Lowndes County, and serve as a reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and equality in the United States.
